Dawgs Pups and Wannabes -
Today's Nine Hills
- In spite of the Old Anal Dog's warning that the weather would
be warm and the drill difficult, 10 Dawgs and 2 first-time Wannabes finally
found their way to the Glenridge Hills Course. After a slow warmup lap
in which Sparky, the reverse blonde, did her best impersonation of the
directionally impaired Jingles, the group of sweat-glistened heroes to be,
toed the line for a non-stop 3-lap run around the one mile-three
hill loop at an up tempo 5K race pace.
Our OUC Half Marathon trainees, Doc, Scraps, Daddy Roo, Stick Man, Pepper,
Sparky and rookie, Jes Wannabe blistered the course in times between Doc and
Scrappy's leading 23:25 and Jes W's closing 26:10 - all excellent efforts
on what felt like a mid-August day - their splits are listed below.
The Stork, Biscuit and newcomer Linda W. wisely skipped the primary workout and
contented themselves with 2-3 laps at "get in shape" speeds.
The OAD, having run earlier in the day and thankful for it, kept each runner's
splits and did his usual quota of shouting, while Footy, back finally
from a shin injury, loped around the area, appearing back at the start/finish
area just frequently enough to achieve recognition in this eloquent epistle of
the day's activities. Now, here are the promised splits - - -
1. Doc - 7:40 - 7:50 - 7:55 = 23:25 2.
Scrappy - 7:25 - 7:15 - 8:45 = 23:25
3. Roo - 7:45 - 8:00 - 7:45 = 23:30 4.
Stick - 8:10 - 8:20 - 8:05 = 24:35
5. Pep - 8:15 - 8:35 - 8:45 = 25:35 6.
Sparky - 8:25 - 8:55 - 8:40 = 26:00
7. Jes - 8:00 - 9:05 - 9:05 = 26:10
Once again, following the workout, the exhausted athletes made their way to
Pepper's nearby home where they were treated, by the very generous and
gregarious Pepper, to a scrumptious brunch of coffee, juice, fresh fruit,
cinnamon rolls, and egg casseroles and later, as a dozen lively,
multi-topic, simultaneous conversations wound down, the weary Dawgs,
reluctantly trudged, one by one, to their cars, and finally called it a
day - a damn good day, at that! As always, thanks Pepper!
